Biden Administration has ‘unfairly vilified’ oil and gas sector, Port CEO tells Fox Business

The Port of Corpus Christi’s top executive decried the Biden Administration during an interview broadcast on the Fox Business Network.

Chief Executive Officer Sean Strawbridge on Thursday told Fox host Stuart Varney, host of the weekday show Varney & Co., the oil and gas sector is being negatively impacted by the current administration’s environmental policy.

Port of Corpus Christi CEO Sean Strawbridge called on the Biden Administration to do more to facilitate US exports during an interview on the Fox Business Network on Thursday. The interview comes after the port saw an increase in exports to the European continent in the wake of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, he said.

The administration, he said, has “unfairly vilified” the oil and gas section and left the sector with a lack of capital that would otherwise be invested in exploration and expanding production.

“We certainly have the capacity to export more to our allies and partners, but we seem to be shooting ourselves in the foot in our ability to actually accomplish that,” Strawbridge told Varney in the 2-minute, 30-second segment.

Strawbridge told the Caller-Times Thursday that his comments came from the apparent decision by the Biden Administration not to allocate additional funds toward the completion of the Corpus Christi Ship Channel Improvement Project, which he said is already funded 75% by American taxpayers.

That decision, he said, was made under a larger initiative by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers not to fund work that directly subsidizes fossil fuels, including work that lowers the cost of production, lowers the cost of consumption, or raises the revenues retained by producers of fossil fuels. That objective is outlined in the USACOE’s 2022 budget.

The port in May 2019 formally broke ground for that project, which will widen and dredge the channel to a depth of 54 feet in order to accommodate larger vessels capable of carrying a greater amount and wider variety of goods.

“(The ship channel improvement project) has already been authorized by Congress three times by both Democratic and Republican administrations,” he said. “Why would we at the 11th hour stop funding a project that increases our exports and decreases our trade deficit is beyond comprehension.”

Strawbridge said the Russia-Ukraine conflict has caused a shift in the market and highlighted the need for the ship channel improvement project. In recent weeks, more than 70% of exports were routed to Western Europe.

“Generally, Europe was about a third” of U.S. energy exportts, he told the Caller-Times in an interview this week. “Asia was closer to more than 40%. The rest was going to other countries, certainly Latin America. The fact we’re seeing a shift now to nearly 70% going to Europe — that’s really a factor of adding Ukraine into the equation.”

He echoed these figures during the Fox interview, calling for the Biden Administration to do more to accommodate that shift.

“Now we are seeing a full 70% (of exports) being rerouted — cargos that were already sailed to other markets — being rerouted to the European continent,” he said. “That’s good news, but we have to be able to produce more. We’ve got to be able to export more, and this administration certainly needs to do more to facilitate that.”

The United States and the European Union announced punishing sanctions against Russia in the wake of the conflict. The stations barred the government and banks out of global financial markets, restricted technology exports and froze assets of influential Russians. Exports on Russian fuel, however, remained unabated in that wave of sanctions.

The Port of Corpus Christi would be in an “enviable position as the largest export gateway of American-produced energy in the nation” if the United States and the European Union went through with the punitive measure, he told the Caller-Times this week.
