Teen Allegedly Fired for Calling Out After Friends Died


A video has gone viral online that allegedly depicts the confrontation with a manager who reportedly denied their teen employee a day off after the death of her friends.

The video appeared on Reddit in the subreddit “Public Freakout” in a post that has been voted on over 40,000 times. It appears, though, that the original video was posted by TikToker @mrdullstar last month.

“People are really horrible, this [alleged] sonic [manager] doesn’t care about anyone’s situation,” read the caption of the video now viewed over 300,000 times on TikTok. “All you have to do is watch the video and see how horrible this person is.”

Is it not made clear what the relationship is between the poster and the “16-year old” employee referenced throughout the video.

The person behind the camera revealed that the manager allegedly fired the teen instead of giving her the day off after four of her friends were killed and one remained in a coma.

Newsweek could not independently verify if the man is in fact a manager at Sonic Drive-In.

In 2017, the Society for Human Resource Management reported that the vast majority of employers provide two to four days of bereavement leave, depending on whether the deceased is a child, spouse, parent or extended family member. Though after the death of a close friend or colleague most companies don’t offer any leave at all.

In the video, the voice behind the camera is heard confronting a person said to be the girl’s manager.

“Four of her friends died and one’s in a coma,” she voice said. “She’s never had to deal with any of this s**t before. That seems a little f**ked up to me, does it not?”

The alleged manager appears to have little empathy for the situation telling the TikToker: “Like I said to you, this is a business, man.”

“I don’t give a s**t if it’s a business. My boss runs a business and he gave me the day off,” the TikToker responded.

The person behind the camera continued to emphasize the employee’s age “she’s a 16-year-old kid.”

The manager seemed to explain that he and the girl’s mother talk on the phone and suggested she call him.

“You fired her over the phone, she tried to explain it to you and you said ‘oh, I’m busy, goodbye,'” the TikToker said in the video.

Commenters were both shocked at the alleged manager’s actions as well as impressed by the TikToker’s decision to confront him.

“So much respect for you after this,” one commenter wrote.

“[I]f he can afford to fire her he can afford to give her the day off,” wrote another person in a comment that has been liked over 2,000 times.

Some comments tagged Sonic Drive-In’s TikTok hoping to get the restaurant’s attention.

“Don’t be shy, expose the manager and Sonic location,” another commenter wrote on TikTok.

On Reddit, commenters shared similar sentiments about the alleged manager’s behavior.

“Don’t waste your life with people who don’t care about your well being,” one Redditor wrote.

“I can’t believe the nerve of this manager. I get it they have a business to run. But they can’t give the girl at least a day off to mourn and visit the grave of their friends. [O]r visit the one in a coma? Just who the hell does this manger [sic] think they are?” wrote another.

Toward the end of the video, the TikToker is heard telling the manager to be a “decent human being” by giving the girl the day off.

“I just can’t understand your thinking right now of firing someone who all their friends just died,” the TikToker said.

“At this point man, if she wants, her mom can call me,” the alleged manager is heard saying as the video comes to an end.
